Situated at a point where the valley opens out, at 330 m above sea level, Bettola is a town rich in history, having also been the theatre of miracles, and today attracts many visitors and tourists to special events and fairs and to visit its monuments.
The name Bettola, which originally referred only to the borgo San Giovanni, reminds us of the vocation of this place. The word "bettola" means "inn" and in fact this was the place par excellence where travellers found refreshment before setting off again on the demanding route leading to the head of the valley.
Bettola was officially founded in 1878, with the union of the two borghi or boroughs of San Bernardino and San Giovanni that had grown up on opposite banks of the Nure, united by the construction of a bridge over the river and by the erection of a Town Hall in the borgo San Giovanni.
An agricultural, commercial and tourist centre, Bettola stands at a point where the valley opens out, at 330 m above sea level. It is a town rich in history and, if the stories of the past can be believed, of miracles too. Tourists and others are attracted by events and fairs, concerts and feste, sports events and evening markets, while fine buildings invite you to stroll around the streets.
