HOLY RITE OF THE RETURN OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN OF THE OAK in BETTOLA
Tradition tells us that in 1496 the Virgin appeared to a shepherd girl on the site of the chapel of the Apparition, a 16th-century building recently restored.
The ceremonies celebrating Mary begin on 29 August with the moving rite of the "descent" of the statue of the Virgin. Every year the Madonna descends from her throne to stand in the presbytery of the shrine in Bettola.
Here she remains until Sunday 26 September when, with the special rite of the "return", the statue of our Lady ascends once more to her throne high up in the shrine. In this way pilgrims from the Nure Valley and neighbouring valleys can honour her so that she will intercede for them.
At 4.30 pm the Eucharist will be celebrated by the Bishop.
