Groppallo

The village of Groppallo (945 m above sea level) in the Lavaiana valley, off the central part of the Nure valley, looks on to the southern slopes of Monte Castellaro (1005 m), an imposing ophiolite rock mass that has influenced the name of the village, which derives from groppo, meaning high point. Until the middle of the 20th century the village preserved its original name of Barsi, while the term Groppallo was reserved for the hill above, also known as Castellaro as there had been a fortress there in the Middle Ages. Today Groppallo is a place for summmer holidays, with its enviable panoramic position above the Nure and looking towards the surrounding mountains. It is the starting point for a number of hiking trails.
