Gropparello - Path of the Rio Rossello

Riserva del Piacenziano - Piacenzian Reserve

Gropparello - Path of the Rio Rossello
The path is about 1 km long and is easy walking. The first part is along a country road while the return crosses the Rio Rossello several times. It is therefore advisable to wear good hiking shoes or wellington boots at rainy times of the year.

There are no drinking fountains along the route, so it is good idea to take some water with you.

The path starts from 'Case Badini', where there is an area for parking. To reach the starting point you need to go through Sariano and the hamlet of 'La Torre'.

Time: about 1 hour and 30 minutes (round trip).

At the beginning the route goes through a rural area, then through the woods, finally reaching the stony bed of the stream with its fossil beds.

This is an area of great biodiversity, where you will often see the tracks and signs of feeding left by animals such as hedgehogs, squirrels, hares, foxes, stone martens, badgers, weasels, roe deer, pocupines and wild boar.

You may also see examples of the birds typically found in the undergrowth of the woods, such as the blackcap, the marsh tit, the blackbird, the wren and the robin, or those found in adjacent grassland, like the hoopoe, the lark and the woodlark, as well as diurnal and nocturnal birds of prey like the common buzzard, the sparrowhawk, the kestrel, the hobby falcon, the scops owl and the owl.

Walking along the stream bed you will notice numerous well-preserved fossils along both banks, reminding us this area was covered by the sea 3.5 million years ago, in the Pliocene era, and that the high concentration of fossils in this area (in this valley and the parallel valleys to the east) has caused one period to be known as Piacenzian.
