Church of Santo Stefano in Verano
Parish church of Verano
The original building of the 16th century had a very ordinary appearance and was of no architectural merit. It was demolished in 1966, saving only the belltower.
The present church, to a design by the engineer Vaccari, was built in the same year.
Inside, some of the furnishings of the old church have been preserved: the altar frontal in scagliola, an oil painting of St Stephen, and the 18th-century crucifix. Other art works were commissioned specially for the new church, such as the Stations of the Cross from the Gardena valley in the South Tyrol.
Not far from the village, signora Lina Buzzetti had another church built in 1968. It was designed by the architect Benedetti and she commissioned frescoes from Luciano Ricchetti, who also painted the façade outside.
Inside the church, the high altar is by Paolo Perotti. The church is seldom open to visitors.
