Vigolzone

Lying between the Nure and the first hills, Vigolzone is an important centre of the province of Piacenza. While the economy is based on agriculture, in particular wine production, engineering, building, clothing and crafts are also significant. The town has a modern appearance but in the centre mediaeval buildings and those from slightly later witness to its long history. The name Vigolzone dates from the late Middle Ages and comes from the word "vicum", indicating a village. The municipality was created in 1806 and the Town Hall was built in 1985. The square in front, Piazza Serena, is the site of the weekly market and also the monthly market (first Sunday of the month) dedicated to local food and craft products. Gastronomic tradition claims that the tortello con la coda (pasta wrapped round a ricotta and spinach filling in the shape of a sweet wrapping) was created here at Vigolzone, a product recently recognised as a Municipally Protected Designation which is celebrated every year in July with a festival of food and dancing, attracting thousands of visitors on the warm summer evenings.
