Silver fir
The silver firs found on Monte Nero never grow very tall, at most 10 metres, and are many centuries old (some of them are 350 years old).
They spread across the Apennines during the post-glacial period (starting 8000 years ago), when the climate was warmer and drier than today. As the climate became cooler and wetter (about 2500 years ago) the silver fir lost ground to the beech, which still dominates our mountains.
