Santa Maria Assunta at Gropparello
Parish church of Gropparello
A pieve (district church) dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta - with numerous dependent chapels in the Chero and Nure valleys - is documented from 1310.
The present church, in neogothic style, was built between 1925 and 1926 to a plan by the architect Pietro Berzolla.
The interior is divided into a nave and two aisles and holds various works of art: in the apse and nave are frescoes by Umberto Concerti restored by Daniele Nastrucci in the 1980s.
Sergio Brizzolesi, a celebrated sculptor originally from Gropparello, has created various works for the church, starting with the Risen Christ on the façade, the reliefs on the doorway and in the Baptistery, and including a Crucifix.
