The lovely Rosania

The Ghost of the Castle of Gropparello

Back in the 13th century the lovely Rosania Fulgosio had been given in marriage to Pietrone, lord of the Rocca or castle of Cagnano.
Once, while her husband was away, the castle was besieged by the troops of the Marquess Pallavicino, commanded by Lancillotto Bracciforti, a handsome and courageous young man who had once been betrothed to Rosania.
The handful of guards left to defend the castle were too few to face the attackers and Rosania, to avoid worse consequences, decided to surrender, obtaining in return guarantees of safety for all those who found themselves inside the castle, and also saving the castle itself from destruction.
Lancillotto took possession of the fortress in the name of his lord and love blossomed anew btween the couple once promised to each other.
Some time later the commandant received orders to depart and off he went, leaving a very few soldiers to guard the Marquess's new possession.
Pietrone was waiting for just such an occasion and he now had no difficulty in defeating the garrison and regaining possession of his fief.
A serving woman in the castle, hoping for a reward, told Pietrone about his wife's unfaithfulness.
The revenge of the lord of Cagnano was not slow in coming, and was terrible. With the excuse of having a safe place that was impregnable in case of future attacks, he had an underground cell built with a massive iron door hidden by large blocks. Sending away most of the servants, he organised a banquet and asked his wife to come down to dinner in her wedding dress. During the feast, Rosania drank a toast with drugged wine, so that she soon fell asleep. When she woke, she found herself alone, imprisoned in a cell that almost no one knew about and where her desperate cries would remain unheard.
And not even the spying servant enjoyed the fruits of her betrayal. Her body was found smashed at the bottom of the gorge of the Vezzeno. The legend tells us that it was Pietrone himself who stabbed her and threw her body down the cliff ...
