Castle of San Giorgio

Castle of San Giorgio
The castle of San Giorgio was founded in 948 when the Emperor Lothair granted a diploma to the canons of Piacenza Cathedral, giving them the right to construct a fortress in defence of the church of San Giorgio (the same document gave permission to fortify also the churches of Cassano and Carmiano.)
Thus the history of the castle and the town are intimately linked right from the beginning. The fortress then came into the possession of the monastery of San Savino, and in the 13th century the Anguissola became lords of the castle, though it passed to the Scotti early in the 17th century.
In the 18th century the castle was divided, when part was sold to the Porcelli family, and the Scotti retained the western side, transforming it into a house with a garden.
Today the castle is the town hall of San Giorgio and also houses the library.
